Behind the book: how blogging inspired a series
By Cara Bristol
An unexpected surge in blog hits inspired a spanking romance series and led to my first Loose Id-published book.
Back in 2010, I’d had two published short novellas. I considered them both “erotic romances” rather than “spanking romances,” even though both contained spanking. During that time, I had begun a blog, which no one visited. In an average week, I’d get maybe 50 hits.
One day I got up and checked my blog and at 9 a.m. I had 75 visits! By the end of the day, I had 350. I checked where they originated (I was smart enough to know I should have some analytics), and they had been referred from a now defunct, but then very popular, blog called My Bottom Smarts. BMS had run a post listing me as a spanking-friendly blog.
Three hundred fifty hits in ONE day? I wasn’t getting that many in a month. My first thought was, OMG, spanking is very popular. There’s a market here!
I’d done some research into domestic discipline, and the secrecy surrounding it intrigued me. They might blog about it (anonymously), but people who practice DD do so under a shroud. Their kids, parents, friends, doctors don’t know that daddy spanks mommy.
I thought what if it wasn’t a such secret? What if there was an organization, a private men’s club, for members who practiced domestic discipline? I envisioned a naive bride marrying a man who belonged to “The Rod and Cane Society” but did not discover until after the wedding what the organization was all about. I wrote the first draft of Unexpected Consequences in thirteen days. Midway through, I realized I had a series on my hands. (As a pantser, I’m always the last to know).
It took me a while to find the right publisher, but I signed with Loose Id in April 2011, and Unexpected Consequences was published in September of that year. Since then, the Rod and Cane series has expanded to include: False Pretenses (book 2), Body Politics (book 3) and Disciplinary Measures (book 4). A fifth book will be completed as soon I finish the Breeder sci-fi romance trilogy.
