Thinking Out Loud by Roxanne D. Howard
As I wrote At the Heart of the Stone, two songs from my playlist stuck out in how Niall and Lark felt about each other. For Niall, his song for Lark is Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran. Niall’s a heart-on-his-sleeve type of guy. While writing the scene where they’re dancing on the deck, it’s the song I had in mind with how he feels about her. Everything with Niall is instinctual, and he naturally throws himself into the thick of things when he meets Lark. He’s into her from day one, and intensely devoted.
Lark’s song is a bit more complicated. Hoobastank’s The Reason nails how conflicted she is over pretty much everything. She’s got a lot on her plate, and then when Niall steps out of her erotic dreams and enters her complicated life, she finds herself changing and discovering things about herself as she deals with the demons from her past. His love changes her, and gives her a reason to explore herself as a person, to take a chance on what they could have.
Here’s the playlist I listened to while writing At the Heart of the Stone.

- “Home” – Daughtry
- “Collide” – Howie Day
- “If I Ever Leave This World Alive” – Flogging Molly

- “One Step Closer” – Bon Jovi
- “Hold my Hand” – Hootie and the Blowfish
- “Thinking Out Loud” – Ed Sheeran
